Oliver Sacks dies at 82: JK Rowling and Olivia Wilde pay poignant tributes to acclaimed author and neurologist
Celebrated British neurologist and author Oliver Sacks has sadly passed away at the age of 82.
Sacks, whose 1973 book Awakenings inspired the 1990 film of the same name, died at his New York home following a battle with cancer.
Awakenings focused on his work bringing patients around to a new way of living after spending years battling illness.
The film version of the book starred Robert De Niro and Robin Williams and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
Sacks also wrote the books The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat and The Island Of The Colorblind.
His publicist Jacqui Graham paid tribute to the scientist and author, saying: "He died surrounded by the things he loved and the people he loved, very peacefully, after an illness he had known about since January this year.
"He taught us a great deal, right up until the very end... he always taught us what it was to be human, and he taught us what it is to die."
Tributes were also paid by the likes of JK Rowling, who described him as "great, humane and inspirational".

I met Oliver Sacks only twice, but greatly admired him. Sad to hear of his death.
