5 ways to spruce up your work suit
Whether it’s a new blouse, bag or brooch, your work uniform deserves a seasonal update too. Stand out in the boardroom with these professional flourishes...
Over adorn
Oversized pussy-bows and beaded floral bouquets burst through the constraints of blazer lapels at Gucci (above); slim silk scarves trailed down the front of Bottega Veneta’s suited models and eclectic pins sat on the lapel’s of Emporio Armani’s leading ladies; the message from the AW15 shows was more-is-more on the accessories front.

If floral arrangements risk tittering in the boardroom, try out a statement brooch on plain blazers. A slim black ribbon tied around the collar and into a neat bow also combats fear of frothy chiffon blouses and can be trialled on all work shirts. (NB: a velvet ribbon will stay in place better and is also a key fabric for AW15).

Contrast colour
Miuccia Prada is out to change the sea of black, white and navy uniforms that sit in offices. Suits at Prada (below) were juxtaposed against punchy shirts, pastel handbags and multi-toned shoes. Brazilian-born Barbara Casasola also concurred and played with burgundy and cobalt blue suiting.

Stomp around
Turning the term ‘power suit’ on its head, designers such as Armani offset AW15 suits with a mannish brogue instead of stilettos. Choose a slightly shorter trouser crop to show off the ankle area; a bare leg will look feminine, while a contrasting sock will nod to the aforementioned colour clash trend.

Double up
Over at Chloé, Prada and Emporio Armani double-breasted suits took centre stage. Think large lapels, neatly stacked buttons and often just a flash of bare skin underneath. If the mannish cut is too severe for you, try fastening a narrow, contrasting-coloured belt around the waist. A heel will also mute this mannish cut.

Show your stripes
Thanks to Donatella Versace, Paul Smith and Antonio Marras the pin-striped city slicker is back. Think dark, slim tailoring with the most microscopic of vertical lines. The secret to nailing this banker’s favourite? Keep your cuts streamlined and frame the rakish silhouette with simple black brogues (bare ankle) and a sleek pochette.
