Jane Birkin's granddaughter steps into the fashion spotlight
Her grandmother inspired a Hermès bag which bears her name and her mother has modelled for Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton. So it was inevitable that Alice Attal would follow in the fashionable footsteps of the strong, stylish women in her family.
But 13-year-old Alice isn’t jumping into modelling alone, instead she and her singer/actress mother are teaming up for French retailer Comptoir des Cotonnier’s 20th anniversary campaign.
The brand has favoured strong, aspirational and photogenic mother-daughter duos instead of traditional models for its campaigns for many years – in fact it is what is at the heart of the brand’s DNA, that blending of Parisian elegance across the generations.
Entitled ’20 years of style, 20 years of love’, Alice and 44-year-old Charlotte are captured on the streets of their native Paris, showcasing creative director Anne Valerie hash’s covetable take on tailoring for autumn 2015.
The pair were captured by British photographer Alasdair McLellan; sadly Gainsbourg’s photographer half-sister Kate Barry, who shot for Comptoir des Cotonniers in 2000, died in 2013.

Gainsbourg is the daughter of the legendary late French singer and artist Serge Gainsbourg, and the product of his 13-year relationship with British model and actress Jane Birkin. The couple embarked on a passionate and creative affair in the late 1960s, which saw them release the sexually explicit duet Je t'aime... moi non plus, in 1969, which was banned by radio stations in Italy, Spain and the UK.
Charlotte Gainsbourg, who was born in London but grew up in France, has two more children with her long-term partner, French actor/director Yvan Attal - Ben, who is 18 and Joe, aged four.
